Firstly, our compliments to the KU Relay's meet director for putting
together such a wonderful venue and the shot put as a marquee event. The
evening was mild and sunny with temperatures in the low sixty degree
range. Several hundred fans showed up in downtown Lawrence, Kansas on
8th street between New Hampshire and Massachusetts St. The shot landing
area was started that morning and was completed by late afternoon. The
mood was festive and laid back while enjoying the shot putters warming
up to the beat of Rock music. Several elite throwers took time out and
greeted and interacted with the spectators. It was obvious before and
then after the event that the fans appreciated the throwers giving of
their time.
Dylan Armstrong was in great form, he opened up with
20.87M and never relinquished the lead. Armstrong's best throw was in
round 5 with 21.52M. Armstrong uses a tight spin and efficient technique
that is most visible in the hi speed image sequence posted below. His
feet remain low to the ground with no wasted motion and his movement was
consistent and solid in all his throws. Reese Hoffa and Adam Nelson
looked only fractions away from some very big throws. Their technique
while different in style, both looked very sound and undoubtedly top end
in our sport. Hoffa posted 21.12M in round 4 with while Nelson hit
20.86M in round 6 and he also had three throws over 20.80M. Ryan Whiting
had a huge throw (foul) in round 4 that was estimated north of 71ft -Zip File - 91 Images. The infraction was at the toe board after his reverse and caused by an
apparent loss of balance (see video) when uploaded. The KU Elite shot
event was great for our sport. It brought new people, new ideas, new
focus and new energy to the shot put event. The enthusiasm in the crowd
during the meet was infectious. Old friends were visited and new friends
made on a special evening where wild shot putters and their fervent fans
celebrated long throws!
